FINDING YOUR CUSTOMERS

Everyone is not your customer. – Seth Godin

No matter how incredible you are, you’re not going to be able to make everyone happy. It’s an unfortunate reality, but it is reality, nonetheless. By the way, not everyone is going to be your cup of tea, either. It’s just part of life. So the question becomes, who does make you happy?

No matter what your big idea is, whatever service you provide, there are people out there who are just waiting to work with you. Discovering them is the process of finding your “target audience.”

Finding your audience may take time, but it keeps your conversation focused. It may take time, but when you try to speak to everyone you speak to nobody at all. Don’t believe us? Try talking to a room full of first-graders and high school seniors about the internet. Getting your message through to both at the same time would take an impressive act.

Focus your communication on one audience at a time, beginning with the people who are most likely to be thrilled by whatever it is that you offer.

To start finding your target audience, look through whatever information you have on your customers or people who are visiting your site. See what those people have in common. The more you can determine what people have in common, the better you’ll be able to articulate who your target audience is.
